Happy Easter!


Like most holidays and special events, we drag Easter out into a week-long event. It started with an egg hunt and face painting at the kids' soccer club on Thursday evening.

On Good Friday we went out for a long, leisurely brunch at our favourite all-day breakfast place, spent the afternoon bike riding and playing at the park, and ended the day with platters of holiday baking and our favourite Easter movie (Hop - nothing says family-friendly Easter like Russell Brand).

Saturday was the local Easter family fun day hosted by the Town - Easter crafts and games, a pancake breakfast, a visit from the Easter Bunny, and a massive Easter egg hunt through the woods. It was tons of fun, all outdoors, and a beautiful, warm, sunny day - the perfect way to welcome spring.

That afternoon we coloured eggs for Sunday's Easter breakfast - one of the kids' favourite traditions (and mine!) To prepare the colour, I fill four bowls each with one cup of boiling water and a couple of teaspoons of vinegar, then add about twenty-five drops of food colouring. We hard-boil a dozen eggs and the kids are in charge of colouring them, dipping and rotating them and mixing their favourite colours. The eggs aren't just for Easter decorations, and they aren't just a part of our Easter breakfast. Part of our family's Easter tradition is cracking the eggs - everyone picks their favourite egg and takes turns smashing them end-to-end with a partner. The last egg left uncracked is the winner!

Easter Sunday always starts with the Easter egg hunt - this year the Easter Bunny left a hundred and eighty chocolate eggs hidden all over the house and the backyard and a basket each filled with chocolates and a stuffed bunny. Oodles of fun - the kids were so excited they were up and ready to get started before seven o'clock. Easter breakfast was cinnamon rolls and fresh fruit and thick slices of ham with cheese - and of course the coloured eggs! This year my eldest was the egg-cracking champion with his deep blue egg.

A couple of great big family dinners with the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and a lot more chocolate rounded out our Easter weekend - and now we're ready for spring!
